VA center in IM earns five-star rating for quality

IRON MOUNTAIN -- The Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center has been given a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the center announced Thursday.
This is the first time CMS has included VA facilities in the annual Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings, according to the center.
The CMS uses five categories -- mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, and timely and effective care -- to award a quality rating for each hospital. The more stars, the better a hospital performed on the available quality measures, with five stars being the top rating.
Overall, 67% of VA hospitals included in the CMS annual Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings received either four or five stars, compared with only 41% of non-VA hospitals.
"My co-workers at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical and our outpatient clinics take pride in our mission and it shows," said John P. Shealey, hospital director. "While we are very proud of the outcome of this report, we will continue to strive to improve and provide the best health care to our veterans."
"Our job at VA is to deliver the best possible care to every veteran who walks through our doors," VA Under Secretary for Health Dr. Shereef Elnahal said. "While we're very proud of these findings, there is still work to do. We will study these results, learn from them, and continue to improve until we're delivering world-class care to every veteran, every time."
