Breitung needs more workers for elections

QUINNESEC — Breitung Township is in dire need of election inspectors, according to Township Clerk Wendy Larson.

Twenty-five more inspectors are needed and interested persons are encouraged to apply, Larson told the township board Monday.

The positions pay $15 an hour plus a meal stipend. To be an inspector, interested parties must be a registered voter in Michigan and must attend a paid training class before working.

Students must be at least 16 years old and must meet voter registration requirements, except for age.

Each county, city, and township in Michigan hires and pays election inspectors, who may be assigned different responsibilities.

At a polling place, election inspectors greet and check in voters, issue ballots and assist with tabulation. Individuals may also be hired to assist with processing absentee ballots.

In other action, the township board:

— Opened bids for new chairs and tables in the board room. Four bids from two vendors were received. No action was taken as the board wants time to get a fair comparison.

— Approved a down payment of $3,988 for security cameras at the East Kingsford Recreation Area and Quinnesec Recreation Area. The installation would include one fixed camera inside the common areas of the skate rink warming houses and two 360-degree cameras at each park, creating total coverage. Poles for the cameras were donated by We Energies and installed by Ryan Okler of Okler Roofing. The Department of Public Works did the trenching and installation of the conduits.

— Passed a resolution in support of the Michigan Township Association’s opposition to proposed legislation giving the Michigan Public Service Commission potential control for the siting and permitting of utility-scale renewable facilities, such as solar farms. House Bills 5150 through 5153 each advanced this week from the Energy, Communications, and Technology Committee on a party-line vote, winning approval from nine Democrats while seven Republicans voted against them.
