Classes resume after reported West Iron threat

IRON RIVER — West Iron County Public Schools will be back in session today after classes were canceled Tuesday due to a reported threat, the superintendent said.

The move Monday evening followed “threatening comments regarding school safety” that were reported to the school resource officer, Superintendent Kevin Schmutzler said in a message to district families and staff that was posted on the West Iron County schools website.

“Choosing to cancel school (Tuesday) allows our law enforcement time to conduct a thorough investigation to ensure our student and staff safety,” Schmutzler said.

The decision to not open Tuesday was made Monday night so parents could make other child care arrangements, he said.

No other information was given as to the nature of the threat, but Schmutzler said an update will be provided “when we have all the facts pertaining to this investigation.”

In an update Tuesday afternoon, Schmutzler announced classes would resume after law enforcement’s initial investigation “determined that there are no immediate threats,” but added that police would have an increased presence around campus “as a precautionary measure.”

He apologized for the inconvenience to district families, explaining, “It’s unfortunate to lose a day of instruction, but we are committed to ensure our staff and students’ safety. We needed this additional time to allow our officers to determine the credibility of the reported threats.”

Schmutzler reassured parents, students and staff the WIC district had already invested in a number of safety measures, including secure entrances and doors, an extensive camera system, a campus-wide emergency notification system, a school resource officer and established building “Behavior Threat Assessment and Management Teams.”

He also thanked “the individual who reported the threat to a trusted adult, along with our valued partnership with our local police and sheriff departments.”

But Schmutzler again did not provide further details on the threat, except to state, “We take these matters very seriously, and the individuals involved will be handled accordingly.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
