Fatal crash in Breitung Township

BREITUNG TOWNSHIP — A 20-year-old Niagara, Wis., man was killed early Saturday in a car crash on Upper Pine Creek Road in Breitung Township, authorities said.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Dispatch Center received an automated alert at 2:56 a.m. Saturday that the owner of an Apple iPhone had been in a severe crash and was not responding to the phone.

According to a news release, a 2014 Chevrolet Camaro was westbound on the Upper Pine Creek Road when the vehicle went off the road, lost control and struck a tree.

The driver was pronounced dead at the site. A 19-year-old passenger from Iron Mountain was treated at Marshfield Medical Center-Dickinson for injuries that were not considered life-threatening, according to the sheriff’s office.

Names were not released. Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the accident, which remains under investigation, the sheriff’s office stated.

Assisting at the crash were Iron Mountain Police, Michigan State Police, Kingsford Public Safety, Iron Mountain Fire Department, Breitung Fire Department, Integrity Ambulance and R&R Towing.
