IRON MOUNTAIN -- An Iron Mountain man charged with making threats against elementary schools waived his right Thursday to a preliminary hearing within 21 days, with his next appearance in Dickinson County District Court scheduled for Nov. 9.
Kyle Anthony Holmberg, 30, is charged with making a false report or threat of terrorism, a felony that carries a prison term of up to 20 years.
According to the complaint, Holmberg reportedly made comments, repeatedly, on how easy it would be to carry out a school shooting. Police executed a search warrant of his apartment, where numerous guns and ammunition were seized including an AR-style weapon.
Iron Mountain Police Department and Kingsford Public Safety Department became aware of alleged threats Sept. 24 against either Woodland Elementary School in Kingsford or North Elementary School in Iron Mountain. The possible threats were reported through a Michigan State Police tip line.
Officers began monitoring Holmberg at his residence and executed a search warrant that night. He was taken into custody without incident.
District Court Judge Julie LaCost on Thursday reminded Holmberg of the terms of his bond.
She modified those terms to allow Holmberg to possess a cell phone so he can call his lawyer, provided the phone does not have a data plan.
Holmberg's lawyer, Abbey Anderson, also clarified with LaCost that during meetings with her client there would be a computer present and the internet could possibly be viewed.
