IM plans to improve two school gymnasiums

Funding includes $100K gift from IMKC Schools

IRON MOUNTAIN — Gymnasiums in the Izzo-Mariucci Building and Central Middle School will get a facelift thanks to some recent donations.

Iron Mountain Public Schools received a $100,000 gift from the Iron Mountain-Kingsford Community Schools and decided to use the money to upgrade its middle school and high school gyms.

The high school gym in the Izzo-Mariucci Building will get a paint job as well as a new sound system and lighting. The floor will be refinished and mechanicals for the baskets will be replaced. Most of the work will be completed by the end of October, except painting, which should be done in early November, the school board was told Monday.

The Central Middle School gym will have the floors stripped completely to the wood and they’ll be repainted and refinished. The gym will receive new paint, lights, sound system and mechanicals. Work is expected to be completed in December or January.

The bleachers will be examined in both gyms to see if they need to be repaired or replaced. Costs for both projects are still being finalized.

There will be donations as well from the Tom Johnson Memorial Fund and the Iron Mountain Athletic Booster Club, with the amounts yet to be determined.

The community schools also donated $100,000 last year. Breitung Township Schools received the same amount both years.

In other business, the school board:

— Approved adding a high school credit for jazz band for eighth-grade students. Numbers are down and this was one way to try to increase participation.

— Approved the Continuity of Learning Plan, which is required by the state and must be approved every six months. The plan is used if the school has to operate remotely as it did during the COVID-19 pandemic.

— Hired Joshua Chevalier as an education assistant in the grades 5-12 building.

— Will coordinate with Norway-Vulcan Schools on a bus run with a lift for a student who will need a chairlift for the next five to six months because of an injury. It will cost the district $75 to $100 per week.
