Breitung school millage, council races on ballot

A millage request in the Breitung Township School District highlights Tuesday’s ballot as voters will also decide city elections in Kingsford, Norway, Iron Mountain, Iron River, Caspian and Gaastra.

Iron River residents will see a millage proposal on the ballot while Kingsford voters will be asked to rescind provisions of the city’s Civil Service Act, which dates to 1935.

In Menominee County, a millage renewal for emergency response and road patrol is proposed.

Summaries follow:

BREITUNG TOWNSHIP SCHOOL DISTRICT

The district seeks approval of a $34.5 million bond for school construction and improvements. The initial tax increase would be 4.6 mills, or $4.60 per $1,000 of taxable value. The average increase would be 4.1 mills over the 25-year life of the bond.

The project includes upgrades at all of the district’s buildings. Additions would include six to seven new classroms and another gym at Woodland Elementary School, a designated band room at Kingsford Middle School and a new 20,000-square-foot multipurpose facility that would also be available for public use. Improvements in safety and security across the district are proposed as well.

The district includes Kingsford, Breitung Township and a portion of Iron Mountain.

KINGSFORD

Voters will decide whether to rescind the provisions of Kingsford’s Civil Service Act, which is used for the selection of entry-level public safety officers and for matters concerning the administration. Because so few other municipalities use a civil service system, the city is at a disadvantage when recruiting candidates for public safety openings. Administrative matters would go to the city’s personnel committee if the Civil Service Commission is discontinued.

In the Kingsford City Council election, incumbents Cynthia Dixon-Miller, Michael Flaminio and Daniel Freeman are seeking to retain their seats. Tracy LaFleur is challenging as a write-in.

IRON MOUNTAIN

There are four Iron Mountain City Council candidates for four at-large seats. They are Mark Wickman and incumbents Kyle Blomquist, Ken Clawson and Pamela Maule. Incumbent Nathan Zemar did not seek reelection.

NORWAY

There are three Norway City Council incumbents on the ballot seeking three seats They are Mayor Candy Brew, Rico Meneghini and Jeff Muraro.

IRON RIVER

A tax levy of 0.5 mills, or 50 cents per $1,000 of taxable value, is proposed for five years to fund parks and recreational facility capital improvements in the city of Iron River. The property tax would raise an estimated $30,000 when first levied in 2024. The proposal states that all millage dollars will be reported on a public website and be subject to an independent yearly audit.

In the election for Iron River mayor, Rodney Dood, a current council member, is unopposed. There are five candidates for two open council seats, including incumbents Benjamin Garcia and Ronjo Leonoff and current Mayor Dennis Powell. Keith Hamel and Mark Polley are also candidates. If Dood were to become mayor, it would leave an additional council seat to fill.

CASPIAN

Incumbents Michael Stachowicz and Ancella Thurston are unopposed for two Caspian City Commission seats.

GAASTRA

Gaastra Mayor Richard Holm and incumbent city commissioners Ethan Amerson and Randy Clements are running unopposed.

MENOMINEE COUNTY

Voters are asked to renew a levy up to 1.7671 mills, or $1.77 per $1,000 of taxable value, for six years to continue funding the Menominee County Sheriff’s emergency response and 24-hour road patrol services. The millage would raise an estimated $1,644,180 when first levied in 2024.
