A millage request in the Breitung Township School District was defeated Tuesday.
The district sought approval of a $34.5 million bond for school construction and improvements. There were 1,855 no votes and 1,128 yes votes, according to published results.
The projected average annual property tax increase was 4.1 mills, or $4.10 per $1,000 of taxable value, over the 25-year life of the bond.
The proposed project included upgrades at all of the district’s buildings and a new 20,000-square-foot multipurpose facility that would also be available for public use.
In the city of Kingsford, voters approved a proposal to rescind provisions of the city’s Civil Service Act, which was used for hiring entry-level public safety officers and for administrative matters. Because so few other municipalities use a civil service system, the city was at a disadvantage in the recruitment of public safety candidates. The vote was 725 yes to 440 no.
Voters in the city of Iron River on Tuesday approved a property tax levy of 50 cents per $1,000 of taxable value to fund parks and recreational facility improvements. The unofficial tally was 287 yes to 158 no.
RonJo Leonoff, with 257 votes, and Dennis Powell, 180 votes, were the winners in a five-way race for two seats on the Iron River City Council. An additional seat will also be open as current council member Rodney Dood ran unopposed for a four-year term as mayor and received 343 votes. Powell is the current mayor.
Finishing third in the council race was incumbent Benjamin Garcia with 177 votes, followed by Mark Polley, 150 votes, and Keith Hamel, 84 votes.
A request in Menominee County to renew a levy of 1.7671 mills, or $1.77 per $1,000 of taxable value, was approved 3,228 yes to 1,348 no. The levy is for sheriff’s emergency response and 24-hour road patrol services.
