HOUGHTON –The Houghton Police Department on Tuesday morning confirmed a fatal shooting at the Douglass House Saloon on Shelden Avenue.

According to a release from the department, at approximately 7 p.m. Monday officers responded to a report of shooting at the downtown establishment.

Upon arrival, officers found a deceased 53-year-old male in the men’s bathroom.

A person of interest, the release states, was taken into custody and lodged in the Houghton County Jail.

No further information will be released pending arraignment in 97th District Court. Dan Helmer, the county’s new prosecutor, officially starts Dec. 4 and the Michigan attorney general’s office is expected to play a role in any charging decisions.
