Four school millages, including Breitung, fail in UP

Voters in the Breitung Township School District rejected a proposed $34.5 million bond issue Tuesday, one of four school millage proposals defeated in the Upper Peninsula.

The Breitung proposal drew 1,855 no votes and 1,128 yes votes. It called for upgrades at all of the district’s buildings and construction of a new 20,000-square-foot multipurpose facility.

The projected property tax increase over the 25-year life of the bond was estimated at 4.1 mills, or $4.10 per $1,000 of taxable value. Proposed additions included six to seven new classrooms and another gym at Woodland Elementary School and a designated band room at Kingsford Middle School. Improvements in safety and security across the district were proposed as well.

Voter turnout in the district was about 30%, according to the Dickinson County clerk’s office.

The next regular meeting of Breitung Township School Board is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday in the media center at Kingsford High School. A special meeting is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Monday at the same location for a board workshop and training.

Elsewhere Tuesday, a proposal from Gladstone Area Schools to borrow up to $35.39 million for school facility improvements was rejected 1,157 to 798.

A request from Gwinn Area Community Schools to borrow up to $45.55 million for several school additions was also turned down, 1,378 to 865.

A request from Sault Ste. Marie Area Public Schools to borrow up to $57 million to build a new elementary school and remodel the Sault Area High School and Career Center building was defeated as well. The vote was 2,837 no to 1,179 yes.

Other results from city elections Tuesday in Dickinson County:

KINGSFORD

Voters agreed to remove provisions of the city’s Civil Service Act used for the selection of entry-level public safety officers and for matters concerning the department’s administration. The vote was 725 yes to 440 no. Because so few other municipalities use a civil service system, the city was at a disadvantage when recruiting candidates for public safety openings, officials had said.

Three incumbent city council members retained their seats. Vote totals were Michael Flaminio, 863; Daniel Freeman, 764; and Cynthia Dixon-Miller, 718. There 104 write-in votes reported, as Tracy LaFleur was a declared challenger. Voter turnout was 28%.

IRON MOUNTAIN

Three incumbent city council candidates retained their at-large seats and newcomer Mark R. Wickman also earned a position. Nathan Zemar did not seek reelection.
