Man accused of school threat bound over to circuit court

KYLE HOLMBERG

IRON MOUNTAIN — An Iron Mountain man accused in September of making a threat to carry out a school shooting has been bound over to Dickinson County Circuit Court.

Kyle Anthony Holmberg, 30, is charged with making a false report or threat of terrorism, a felony that carries a possible prison term of up to 20 years.

Iron Mountain Police Department and Kingsford Public Safety Department became aware Sept. 24 of alleged threats to carry out a school shooting at either Woodland Elementary School in Kingsford or North Elementary School in Iron Mountain. A warranted search of Holmberg’s apartment turned up numerous guns and an AR-style rifle, authorities said.

At a hearing Thursday before District Court Judge Julie LaCost, the case was waived into circuit court with the stipulation that if new evidence is found the circuit court would retain the ability to remand the case back to district court. During the search, electronic devices were seized and sent to a laboratory for forensic evaluation, which could take a considerable amount of time to get results back.

Holmberg’s lawyer, Abbey Anderson, asked the court for a modification in his bond to allow Holmberg supervised visits with his sister’s children. LaCost agreed.

LaCost also granted Holmberg permission to use the internet for video conferences with his employer regarding his status, provided he only access the internet from a computer at his union hall.

Holmberg’s next court appearance is an arraignment scheduled for Monday before Circuit Court Judge Mary Barglind.

Starting at $3.50/week.
