IRON MOUNTAIN -- The U.S. Postal Service later this month plans to remove the familiar blue collection boxes on East Hughitt Street behind the Iron Mountain post office.
A note taped to two of the four boxes on Hughitt Street states they will be taken out about 30 days from Oct. 17, and that the closest box after that point would be at the Kingsford post office, 700 W. Breitung Ave.
That implies other collection boxes in Iron Mountain could be slated for removal as well. A local USPS official responded to a request for more information by sending a national USPS news release but declined to provide other details on local changes.
The national USPS news release stated this was part of their Project Safe Delivery campaign, announced in May, "to combat the recent rise in threats and attacks on letter carriers and mail theft incidents by protecting postal employees and the security of the nation's mail and packages."
According to the news release, the USPS plans to install tens of thousands of high-security blue collection boxes nationwide. But it had no information on whether Iron Mountain is on that list.
The news release concluded, "In specific locations where a blue box is a repeated crime target and/or mail density is very low, collection boxes may have to be removed entirely when access is not meaningfully diminished due to nearby access points."
No information was available on whether the Iron Mountain collection boxes had been "crime targets."
The Hughitt Street collection boxes are just off the road and allow vehicles to drive through for dropping off mail. It appeared to have a steady flow of traffic.
