Breitung to modify township treasurer’s position
QUINNESEC — Breitung Township Board has approved a 4.5% salary increase for the township treasurer, but in November the pay will drop substantially as the duties will be modified.
From Jan. 1 to Nov. 19, the treasurer will be paid an annual salary of $61,776. On Nov. 20, the duties of the treasurer will be adjusted and the compensation will be a stipend of $700 per month.
The change will come with the expectation of creating a clerk assistant/accountant position. The treasurer’s position is currently held by Carol Taylor.
In other business Tuesday, the board:
— Approved a salary of $65,181 for Wendy Larson, township clerk. Per the request of Denny Olson, township supervisor, the salary for his position will remain at $9,200 with no raise.
— Adopted the 2024 budget by activity level. Estimated township general fund revenues for the fiscal year of 2024 include an allocated millage of 4.2 mills, raising $1.1 million. Total revenue for the year will be approximately $4.78 million, with appropriations of $4.76 million.
— Passed amendments to the 2023 budget, including shifting $370,000 for the fire department to correct a misapplied expense related to buying a new pumper truck. Other amendments were due to additional projects, non-regular maintenance and personnel changes encountered in 2023.
— Set the 2024 meeting schedule. Meetings will remain on the second and fourth Mondays of the month but will now start at 7 p.m. Due to the presidential primary, the Feb. 26 meeting will be at Fire Hall No. 1.
— Moved the April 22 meeting to April 29 due to a scheduling conflict and the May 27 meeting to May 28 due to Memorial Day.
— Authorized paying $3,600 in tuition to Midwest Truck Driving School in Escanaba for a department of public works employee to get his Class B CDL license. Also approved $120 for the assessor, deputy assessor and assessing clerk to take a virtual training course as part of their continuing education.
