Dickinson debates county fair board issue

IRON MOUNTAIN — Charles Parker was reappointed Tuesday to Dickinson County Fair Board in a 3-2 vote as county commissioners also debated removal of a fair board member for absenteeism.

Parker, who was appointed two years ago to fill a partial term, will serve a full three-year term after receiving support from County Board Chairman Henry Wender and commissioners Ann Martin and Joe Stevens.

Commissioner Barbara Kramer and Fair Board Chairman John Degenaer Jr. voted for John Gunville, a former fair board member. Gunville was late with his application for reappointment in February and was not considered at that time.

Degenaer reported that Diana Oman, who was appointed to fill a partial term in February, was recommended for removal from the fair board in an 8-4 vote. Over the past nine months Oman has missed eight meetings, both regular and special, including two times recently without offering a reason, he said.

The recommendation for removal was defeated in a 3-2 vote with only Degenaer and Kramer supporting.

Martin, who also serves on the fair board, was joined by Stevens in saying Oman should have a chance to appear before the county board. Martin said she took it upon herself to contact Oman, who was traveling and unaware of the recommendation, and Oman made that request.

Stevens added that a person recommended for removal “should be called by the chairman.”

Kramer, on the other hand, gave examples of similar cases where a removal wasn’t questioned by the county board.

Degenaer was irked that Martin voted against removal in opposition to the fair board’s majority recommendation. Martin had also voted against removal at the fair board level, he said.

He termed it “a disgrace” the commissioner went against the fair board’s action.

Martin said Oman may eventually be removed but “I think she has a right to be present.”

The county board voted 4-1 to again take up the recommendation at its next regular meeting. Degenaer dissented.

Other members of the fair board are Liane Arnold, Rob Barkle, Tom Bedard, Beth Bray, James DalSanto, Ashley Edwards, Mike Gregg, Anthony Grudnoski and James Stachowicz.

In other action, the county board:

— Heard Controller Brian Bousley report an incoming SkyWest Airlines flight from Detroit was unable to land Friday at Ford Airport due to heavy fog. The flight returned to Detroit, he said.

— Adopted the proposed 2024 county budget calling for a property tax levy of 6.1323 mills, or $6.13 per $1,000 of taxable value, the same as the current rate. No one from the public commented during the annual hearing on the budget. Wender and other commissioners praised Bousley’s management.

— Scheduled its 2024 organizational meeting for 9 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, in the correctional center conference room.
