QUINNESEC -- Breitung Township will consult with an engineering firm on a planned addition to the township offices in Quinnesec before sending out a request for proposals.
The infrastructure committee has received suggestions from township employees. While the committee would prefer a basement and elevator, staff prefers a one-level structure.
Superintendent Steve Mulka had recommended a request for proposals from engineering firms to design the addition. The township board, while in agreement, said it would like to have some input as well.
"There has got to be some discussion before we put that proposal out there for engineering and design," Supervisor Denny Olson said at Monday's meeting.
In another capital improvement project, the board will hold preliminary talks with engineers on replacing a damaged dry storage building. The township received almost $40,000 as an insurance settlement but the building was depreciated from the original value of $80,000. If the replacement cost exceeds $80,000, the township may be able to get an adjustment from the insurance company.
In other business, the board:
-- Approved a bid from Gabridge and Co. of Grand Rapids to perform the audits for the township for the next three years. The bid for 2023 was $19,600 and goes up $600 each subsequent year. The township has been satisfied with Gabridge's services the past several years.
-- Postponed an appeal of dangerous building hearing for a property owned by Kerry Schinderle at 421 Henford Ave. because a written notice could not be served to Schinderle. At a Dec. 20 dangerous building hearing, it was determined Schinderle had a long history of noncompliance with ordinances and his property was a safety and health risk to his neighbors. The hearing officer gave Schinderle a Dec. 30 deadline to clean up debris from a November fire.
Mulka noted that with appeals and the time it will take to possibly go through the courts, it could be fall before any action could be taken. He will consult the city attorney to see if an appeal could occur without Schinderle's participation.
-- Approved a $500 donation for the Kites Over Awesome Lake Antoine event, which will take place March 8 and 9. Mulka noted the event was very popular and well attended last year and highlights a premiere camping facility in the township.
-- Approved naming the public works building the Guy Forstrom Building after a longtime township employee. It was noted Forstrom had many years of service before, during and after the building of the public works facility. A dedication will be set for the spring.
