Civil Air Patrol promotion

2 min read

Norway High School sophomore Mark Street was promoted from chief master sergeant to cadet second lieutenant in the Dickinson County chapter of Michigan Wing of Civil Air Patrol during a special ceremony Sunday at the armory in Kingsford. Street has also earned the prestigious Billy Mitchell Award, which guarantees him an E-3 rank in the U.S. Air Force should he decide to enlist and a similar rank in most other branches of the service. Only 15% of CAP members earn this award. Street said he has been a member of the non-profit Air Force auxiliary for about four years, after looking for something that would accept his age group. He said will remain with the organization for as long as he can and hopes to earn promotion to first lieutenant. He plans to enlist in the Air Force to study aircraft and vehicle maintenance and eventually engineering. His mother, Kelly Zahn, is a senior CAP member and said the organization provided good structure for her son. "It's versatile; it's male and female cadets; it's a team effort and it's very, very well organized," she said. Street received his pins from his mother, right, and state Sen. Ed McBroom as Dickinson chapter leader Capt. Rick Louys looked on. (Marguerite Lanthier/Daily News photo)
