IM man sent to prison on car theft, escape charges

TYLOR JOHNSON

IRON MOUNTAIN — An Iron Mountain man will spend 42 months to 15 years in prison after resisting arrest for a stolen vehicle, then attempting to escape from police while being sent to the hospital for a supposed medical emergency.

District Judge Christopher Ninomiya handed down the prison term Jan. 22 to 33-year-old Tylor Johnson in Dickinson County Circuit Court.

According to the criminal complaint, the Iron Mountain Police Department on Oct. 20 found Johnson with a vehicle reported as stolen. But Johnson refused the officers’ commands and resisted arrest. Then when taken to Marshfield Medical Center-Dickinson, Johnson grabbed an officer’s Taser.

At Dickinson County Correctional Center, Johnson appeared to have a medical emergency, so an ambulance was called. But he escaped and ran while in the process of being secured in the ambulance, the complaint states.

With several officers and a firefighter giving chase, Johnson ignored commands to stop running until he was located and tackled to the ground. One officer had abrasions and lacerations to his elbow and hand during the apprehension.

After Johnson pleaded guilty in December, Ninomiya sentenced him Monday to 42 months to 15 years for the stolen property-receiving and concealing-motor vehicle, 42 months to 15 years for the peace officer-disarming/non-firearm charge, two years to 15 years for each one of two police officer-assaulting/resisting/obstructing charges, one year in county jail for escape-awaiting trial for felony charge and 42 months to 15 years for the police officer-assaulting/resisting/obstructing causing injury.

All sentences will run concurrently. Johnson will receive no credit for time already served, as he was on parole when the offenses took place.
