Proposed millage renewals won support Tuesday across Dickinson and Iron counties, including a five-year levy in the city of Iron Mountain that will continue to fund a school liaison officer.
The liaison officer levy of up to 0.55 mills, or 55 cents per $1,000 of taxable value, was approved 680 yes to 409 no in Tuesday's presidential primary election.
It's estimated that 0.55 mills would raise approximately $145,000 in 2025. The city, however, will levy only the amount needed to fund the school officer position, which is currently 0.4551 mills, or about 46 cents per $1,000 of taxable value.
In Norway Township, voters approved a four-year renewal of 2 mills, or $2 per $1,000 of taxable value, for fire protection and roads. The tally was 362 yes to 101 no.
A proposed four-year renewal of 0.42 mills, or 42 cents per $1,000 of taxable value, for the Dickinson-Iron District Health Department was also approved Tuesday. In Dickinson County, the total was 3,082 yes to 2,351 no. In Iron County, it was 1,894 yes to 936 no.
Iron County voters backed a pair of levies for Central Dispatch/911 services. A four-year renewal of 1 mill, or $1 per $1,000 of taxable value, passed with 2,103 yes to 722 no.
A new four-year levy of 0.25 mills, or 25 cents per $1,000 of taxable value, was approved 1,800 yes to 1,012 no.
Voters in Iron County also approved a five-year renewal of 1.5 mills, or $1.50 per $1,000 of taxable value, for Iron County Medical Care Facility operations. The vote was 1,938 yes to 900 no.
Dickinson's countywide millage proposals that passed Tuesday included:
-- Two separate millage renewals of five years for senior citizen centers and programs. A proposal to renew 0.15 mills, or 15 cents per $1,000 of taxable value, was approved 3,680 yes to 1,767 no. A proposal to renew 0.25 mills, or 25 cents per $1,000 of taxable value, was approved 3,347 yes to 2,087 no.
-- A four-year renewal of 0.1 mills, or 10 cents per $1,000 of taxable value, to provide professional assistance for obtaining Medicare, Medicaid, prescription drugs, affordable health insurance, prescription assistance and other related health care benefits. The current levy funds the Medical Care Access Coalition. The total was 3,180 yes to 2,251 no.
Also approved were:
-- A five-year renewal of 1.7373 mills, or $1.74 per $1,000 of taxable value, for West Iron District Library services. The total was 1,061 yes to 572 no.
-- In Iron County's Bates Township, a four-year renewal of 3 mills, or $3 per 1,000 of taxable value, for general township purposes and road maintenance. The vote was 213 yes to 81 no.
-- In the North Central Area School District in Menominee County, an operating millage renewal of up to 18 mills, or $18 per $1,000 of taxable value. The proposal was approved 439 yes to 167 no.
