Beekeeping class planned on Feb. 17

NORWAY — Northwoods Beekeepers will hold its annual Beginning Beekeeping Class from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17, at Crossroads Alliance Church in Norway.

“Keeping honey bees in the Northwoods is different from keeping bees in the South or even in the southern regions of Michigan and Wisconsin,” says Bernie Driggs, veteran beekeeper in Sagola. “This meeting will cover the basics of how to keep honey bees in our area. Attending this class will greatly improve a first-time beekeeper’s odds of establishing a successful hive of bees.”

Topics covered in the three-hour class will include basic honey bee biology, buying the right equipment, where to get your bees, how to install and inspect a bee colony, and ways to protect hive health. The event will include whole group presentations and breakout sessions for small-group interaction.

Register for the Beginning Beekeeping class by contacting the club at borderlandbeeks@gmail.com or 906-221-3368 by Wednesday, Feb. 14. The class is free. A donation of $5 per person is suggested to cover costs.
