Dickinson early voting draws 290

IRON MOUNTAIN — At the close of early voting Sunday, 290 Dickinson County voters had cast a ballot in Michigan’s presidential primary, County Clerk-Register of Deeds Carol Bronzyk said.

Statewide, more than 78,000 citizens voted in person at an early voting site, according to Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson.

This was the first statewide election with in-person early voting as established under Proposal 2 of 2022. A countywide voting site at Kingsford City Hall was made available to all Dickinson voters for nine straight days beginning Feb. 17.

In additional to the presidential primary, the ballot in Dickinson County includes several millage proposals. Polls at respective municipal sites are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. today.

At Monday’s county board meeting, Bronzyk noted the cost for ballots for this election came to about $40,000, with reimbursement expected from the state.

In other action, the county board:

— Heard Sheriff Scott Rutter report the Continental Cup ski jumping tournament this past weekend at Pine Mountain “went very well.” Some changes by the Kiwanis Ski Club resulted in a better traffic flow, he said, adding a meeting should soon take place to follow up on any issues.

— Heard Chairman Henry Wender commend the ski club for an outstanding event at Pine Mountain. Marshfield Medical Center-Dickinson was the title sponsor for the meet, which included two competitions Saturday. The Sunday event was canceled by high winds but still drew thousands of tailgaters. Commissioner Ann Martin said she heard from the public that the setup for spectators was improved.

— Approved the payment of $14,975 to Woodward Repair and Services LLC of Foster City for a West Branch Township Fire Hall project. This represents a 50% deposit, with the balance to be paid when work is completed. The county board in 2022 redirected $1 million of its $4.9 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act funds to allow each of the 10 municipalities in the county to spend $100,000 on infrastructure.
