Today’s Northern Lites Fishing Derby on Fisher Lake in Florence was canceled.

Next weekend is wintertime free fishing in Michigan. On Feb. 17-18, fishing license fees will be waived and a Recreation Passport will not be required for entry into state parks and boating access sites. All regulations still apply.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is encouraging anyone planning on ice fishing to consult Michigan.gov/IceSafety before any on-ice activities.

The Wisconsin DNR invites the public to join staff members Monday at its field office in Peshtigo, Wis., for the third meeting of a six-part series focused on fisheries management in northeast Wisconsin.

This session focuses on northern pike and yellow perch management in Green Bay. Tammie Paoli, DNR fisheries biologist, will provide an overview of the unique life history and spawning migrations of northern pike in Green Bay and present results from a 2023 fyke netting survey targeting pike.

The meeting will be held in person at 101 N Ogden Road, Peshtigo, and via Zoom from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. Zoom registration information is available at https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/calendar?field_meeting_details_value=Northeast%20Wisconsin%20Fisheries.

Warm weather has forced cancellation of the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman workshop scheduled for Feb. 23-25 at Bay Cliff Health Camp in Big Bay. Sufficient snow and ice are needed for some of the most popular winter activities, including cross-country skiing, advanced snowshoeing and ice fishing, said John Pepin, Michigan DNR deputy public information officer and BOW administrator.

“Despite colder temperatures and wintry weather being forecasted to return, the damage caused to already deteriorated snow and ice conditions by two to three days of predicted rain showers are likely to have a significant negative impact,” he said.

The DNR’s next BOW weekend workshop is scheduled for May 31-June 2 at the Bay Cliff Health Camp.

Wisconsin’s sturgeon spearing season opens today on the Winnebago System but poor ice conditions and warm weather will keep most anglers on shore.

Under the current rule, the sturgeon spearing season opens on the second Saturday in February, regardless of weather conditions. It continues for 16 consecutive days unless closed early if harvest registration data indicates the harvest cap will be met.

State law states that sturgeon spearing can only legally be done from within a shelter placed upon the ice.

Local fishing clubs were advising against even small vehicles on the ice and urged caution if going out onto the ice at all.

Starting at $3.50/week.
