IRON MOUNTAIN -- The Iron Mountain School Board has decided to place some of the more than $4 million donated by the Zanardi Family Trust into financial institutions and use some for school projects and repairs.
The board approved investing $500,000 in the scholarship account with First Bank and another $500,000 into a money market account at First National Bank & Trust.
Funds will also be used for various repairs. Superintendent Jerry Sardina told the board a spreadsheet has been compiled listing repairs and items needed for the school district's buildings.
The items are rated based on need, with both large and small items on the list.
Some possible items mentioned include bathrooms at North Elementary, the HVAC system in the Izzo-Mariucci building, carpeting and painting where needed in all buildings. Smaller items could be equipment for cleaning the schools. Once the board decides which items to address, they will get bids.
The board also heard from Sardina that a lease agreement with the Imagination Factory Children's Museum for the former Central School building has been completed. It is expected to be signed soon.
The lease is for 50 years with renewal each year. The district would have the option to use parts of the building temporarily if they need space. The Imagination Factory board is seeking grants to remodel the building.
The district would then able to utilize the space in the building that currently houses the museum.
In other business, the board Monday:
-- Accepted letters of intent to retire from teachers Jeff Christiansen, Michele Haferkorn and Jodi Maycunich.
-- After a question by board member Eli Ward about the bowling team, discussed the possibility of creating an account to help provide financial assistance to unfunded sports such as boys and girls soccer, boys baseball, girls softball and boys and girls bowling.
-- Learned union negotiations will begin in April.
