Mild winter nixes some events, but not all, as colder weather looms later this month

IRON MOUNTAIN — Ice conditions are highly variable on water bodies across the region and snowmobile trails are closed as daytime highs in the 40s are predicted through next week.

A colder, stormier weather pattern may take hold by mid-month, but several cancellations are on the record.

In Marinette, Wis., an ice fishing derby scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 10, at Red Arrow Park has been called off by Communities that Care and the Healthy Youth Coalition.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources on Friday announced cancellation of the Black Lake sturgeon season scheduled to start today in Cheboygan and Presque Isle counties in northern lower Michigan.

With ice conditions marginal, there was concern that DNR personnel couldn’t effectively monitor the season. This is the first time it’s been canceled.

“In addition to protecting the lake sturgeon population, the safety of anglers and staff is critically important,” said Randy Claramunt, DNR Fisheries chief. “We encourage all anglers across Michigan to use extreme caution while on the ice.”

Due to deteriorating trail conditions and concern for the safety of mushers and dogs, UP200 this week canceled the UP200, Midnight Run and Jack Pine 30 scheduled for Feb. 16-18.

Sled dog demonstrations are still planned Friday, Feb. 16, in downtown Marquette as part of Festival of the Sled Dog Powered by NMU, said Darlene Walch, UP200 president. “We appreciate the support of the community as we pivot to a festival format,” she said.

In Wisconsin, Marinette County has closed its motorized recreational trail system to all wheeled, motorized vehicles until further notice. Trails will re-open once conditions can support traffic without damage to the trail, said the Marinette County Forestry Department.

Outdoor activities today include Tip-Up Town of the U.P. at the Sagola Township Sportsmen’s Club north of Channing. Admission to the club is free and food will be served until 6 p.m.

In Florence County, Wis., the Roadhouse 139 Fishing Derby wraps up at 4 p.m. today on Long Lake with music also featured.
