Missing boy found safe in Florence County

FLORENCE, Wis. — A 4 1/2-year-old boy was found safe within two hours after being reported missing Saturday afternoon during a family walk in the woods in Fern, Wis.

The Florence County Sheriff’s Department was alerted at 4:15 p.m. and quickly began a ground search, said Sheriff Teresa Chrisman. A track by the agency’s K-9 was also started and a drone was deployed.

Assisting were the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Florence County Forestry, Wisconsin State Patrol, Florence, Fence, Long Lake and Tipler volunteer firefighters, Florence County EMS and Emergency Management, and the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office.

“Thankfully, the boy was found safe within two hours of the call,” Chrisman said in a news release.

Earlier in the day, at 3:54 a.m., deputies responded to a call of a structure fire in Aurora, Wis.

Deputies observed flames coming from the roof as the owners of the home were evacuated, Chrisman said. No one was injured, she added.

Aurora Fire Department was assisted at the scened by volunteer firefighters from Homestead, Fence, Florence and Niagara, Wis., as well as Breitung Township Fire Department and Florence County EMS and Emergency Management.

“Once again these calls show the importance of volunteers and community fellowship; coming together when needed the most,” Chrisman said. “Our community continues to support us and I really appreciate that. Our K9 program just had another very successful fundraiser, and again that is because of volunteers.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
