IRON MOUNTAIN -- Austria's Jonas Schuster uncorked a leap of 456 feet in today's Continental Cup opener at Pine Mountain, sending him into first place over teammate Francisco Moerth.
Schuster's first jump of 430 feet had him in fifth place entering the second round, but the 456-footer propelled him into the top spot and held up through the rest of the event.
Moerth went 425 feet in the first round, which had him in fourth place entering the second. He flew 446 feet to claim second place.
Placing third was Markus Eisenbichler of Germany, who had two jumps of 431 feet.
First round leader Maximilian Ortner of Austria placed fourth, sailing 446 feet and 420 feet.
Finishing fifth was Fredrik Villumstad of Norway, soaring 427 feet on his first ride and 431 feet on his second.
Schuster, 20, is the son of Austrian coach Werner Schuster, who claimed three titles at Pine Mountain as a competitor from 1987 to 1995.
In 1991, Werner Schuster broke the 400-foot barrier at Giant Pine, setting a hill record that stood for five years.
U.S. jumper Jason Colby of Steamboat Springs, Colo., was sixth after the first round but fell to 16th. His distances were 438 feet and 392 feet.
A second Continental Cup competition was scheduled to start today at 2 p.m.
On Sunday, a trial round is scheduled for 11 a.m. with competitive jumping at 1 p.m.
