Tip-Up Town: Sun-splashed forecast for annual Channing event

The 50th annual Tip-Up Town of the U.P. is set for Saturday. The fishing contest, sponsored by the Sagola Township Sportsmen’s Club, runs from 7 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. at Edey Lake or Sawyer Lake north of Channing. Club president Tony Erickson measures Mia Fedrizzi’s northern pike at a previous tournament.

SAGOLA — It’s a go for the 50th annual Tip-Up Town of the U.P. on Saturday.

The forecast for the tournament is mostly sunny with a high of 41 degrees.

After a long run of unseasonably warm weather, the president of event sponsor Sagola Township Sportsmen’s Club reminds anglers to use caution on the ice.

Ice conditions at both lakes can vary in depth, ranging from decent in some areas to open waters, Tony Erickson said.

The fishing contest will run from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Participants can register at 7 a.m. at the clubhouse, W8470 Sawyer Lake Road about 4 miles north of Channing, and fish either Edey Lake or Sawyer Lake in Sagola Township. All taking part must purchase a button and register for the event. Buttons are $10 for adults and $5 for ages 17 and younger.

All measuring will be done at the clubhouse, with awards presented at 5 p.m. Cash prizes will be paid for first through third place in adult class in five species categories, Erickson said.

For children, prizes will be given through fifth place in the five fish categories. Each first-place winner will receive a trophy in addition to a bucket filled with prizes, sponsored by MJ Drilling, Erickson said.

New this year, the Sportsmen’s Club invites youth to shoot either air BB guns or archery with a certified instructor in the clubhouse’s downstairs.

The clubhouse will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. for those who want to warm up or purchase lunch. They will serve a variety of food, including brats, hot dogs, burgers and their famous french fries. Beverages will be available for purchase as well.

Admission to the clubhouse is free.

The club will sell raffle tickets for its fundraiser drawing for a side-by-side, which will be on display Saturday.

Erickson encourages the community to come out and enjoy the day.

Sponsors include 41 Lumber; Minerick Logging; J Carey Inc.; MJ Drilling; R Cabins; Johnson Potato Farm; Northern Interstate Bank; Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home and Cremation Services; Cuculi’s Bar; Atkinson Petruska Kozma Hart & Couture; and PromoMax Northern Specialty Co.

The club’s annual Gun and Knife Show follows the next week, set for 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at the clubhouse. Several vendors will be on site and food will be available.
