IM man faces crash charges
IRON MOUNTAIN – An Iron Mountain man is accused of being intoxicated when he crashed his vehicle into the back of another vehicle and then into a fence while fleeing from officers in mid-January.
Juwan Leonard Washington, 27, has pleaded not guilty in Dickinson County Circuit Court to the felony charges of operating while intoxicated-third offense, police officer-fleeing-fourth degree and habitual offender-second offense. Washington also faces misdemeanor charges of failure to stop at a personal injury accident, motor vehicle-operation without security, operation-no license/multiple licenses, failure to report accident to fixtures and alcohol-open container in vehicle.
According to the criminal complaint, on Jan. 18 Washington hit the back of an occupied vehicle and then fled, later crashing into a fence at a mobile home park.
When police attempted to stop him, Washington put the vehicle in reverse but eventually got stuck in a snowbank.
Authorities said Washington performed poorly on field sobriety tests. His vehicle was uninsured and an open liquor bottle was found inside.
Washington remains in jail in lieu of a $7,500 bond. A pretrial conference is set for April 8.
