Cougar sighting at Fumee Lake
QUINNESEC — A cougar sighting has been reported at Fumee Lake Natural Area.
The Fumee Lake Natural Area’s Facebook page posted Thursday that a cougar was seen crossing a trail between the lakes in front of two people earlier this week.
Residents stated they also saw a large cat — possibly the same one — a few weeks ago.
Rather than ignoring the situation, the Fumee Lake Commission sought out helpful information from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources of what a person should do if a cougar is encountered.
They recommend that a visitor should remove any listening devices and be aware of their surroundings.
Other tips include:
— Face the animal and do not act submissive. Stand tall, wave your arms, and talk in a loud voice.
— Never run from a cougar or other large carnivore. If children are present, pick them up so they cannot run.
— If attacked, fight back with whatever is available. Do not play dead.
— Report the encounter to local authorities and the DNR as soon as possible.
The commission has also posted signs at the Fumee gate to inform the public.
