Kingsford names top seniors for 2024

LAUREN ABRAHAM

KINGSFORD — Breitung Township Schools District has announced the top 10% of Kingsford High School seniors in the Class of 2024.

These seniors earned a grade-point average of 3.986 to 4.181. They are:

— Lauren Abraham is the daughter of Chris and Jessica Abraham. Her school activities include Key Club, National Honor Society, pep band, jazz band and Middle of the Open Road marching band. Honors are National Honor Society, twice Artist of the Month and twice ASA Merit Award.

Abraham plans to pursue an animation/illustration major at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design.

— Madeline Boehmer is the daughter of Michele and Brian Boehmer. Her school activities include president of Key Club, member of National Honor Society, a thrower on the KHS track team, developed Happy Healthy Day program and is a student leader at the Imagination Factory Children’s Museum. Honors are Academic Bar and letter, Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen award, Youth Changemaker award with 400-plus hours of community service, Michigan Community Impact award and Innerview national ambassador award.

MADELINE BOEHMER

Boehmer plans to major in medical laboratory science and minor in Spanish at Michigan Technological University toward becoming an internal medicine doctor.

— Christopher Burie is the son of Marc and Melissa Burie. His school activities include robotics, High School Bowl, pep band and marching band. His honors are National Merit Scholarship finalist, AP Computer Science Department award, AP Calculus Department Award, Physics Department Award, FIRST Robotics dean’s list semifinalist and Student of the Week.

Burie plans to study computer science with a minor in robotics engineering at Lake Superior State University.

— Zoey Cowling is the daughter of Charles and Shannon Cowling. Her school activities include Peer to Peer, pep band, marching band, National Honor Society and Flivver Way ambassador.

Honors are National Honor Society, Academic Bar for all A’s for five semesters, Academic Bar for all A’s for three semesters, Honor Roll for all A’s for six semesters, WSMU Honors Band nomination, Bark River Conference Honors Band for three years, qualified for four events for state Solo and Ensemble and earned a first rating in three events.

CHRISTOPHER BURIE

Cowling plans to pursue an associates degree in business-entrepreneurship at Bay College.

— Nicklas Doran is the son of Tina and Brian Doran. His school activities include varsity golf, varsity hockey, Kiwanis Key Club and National Honor Society. Honors are B or better for five semesters, honor roll and top 10%.

Doran is undecided on what college or university he will attend but plans to pursue a degree in computer science.

— Iliana Gayan is the daughter of Geoffrey and Celine Gayan. School activities include Kingsford concert chorale, National Honor Society, Drama Club, High School Bowl, chamber choir, KHS band and Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Her honors are National Rural and Small Town Recognition Program Award, MTU Leading Scholar finalist, GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program semifinalist, all A’s for six consecutive semesters, B or better for one semester, Michigan Governor Youth Service Award and Youth Spirit of Hope Award for 200 volunteer hours.

ZOEY COWLING

Gayan plans to study engineering or another STEM-related field at Michigan Technological University.

— Lance Harry is the son of Lisa and Jeff Harry. School activities include golf, robotics and National Honor Society. Honors include KHS Honor Roll all A’s for four years, CAD Student of the Semester in his junior year and Academic Letter and Bar for all A’s for three years.

Harry plans to attend Pilotsmith Flight Academy in Green Bay, Wis.

— Noah Johnson is the son of Eric and Rachel Johnson. School activities include football, wrestling and track. Honors are football Associated Press all-state second team, All-Region first-team twice, U.P. Defensive Player of the Year, U.P. Dream Team twice, Conference Defensive Player of the Year, First Team All-Conference twice, wrestling state qualifier, track U.P. champion in discus, school record-holder and tied an Upper Peninsula record.

Johnson plans to study construction management and play football and throw discus at Michigan Technological University in Houghton.

NICKLAS DORAN

— Adelaide McRoberts is the daughter of Hank and Lisa McRoberts. School activities include student council member, National Honor Society, Key Club, Flivver Family member, Students Against Destructive Decisions and varsity swim team. Honors are top 10%, academic letter, academic bar, Merit Volunteer Award, Michigan High School Athletic Association Athlete of the Week, MHSAA swimmer of the year, KHS varsity swim team MVP, KHS swim team high-point winner, National Honor Society president, student council president, Green Bay YMCA captain, national swim qualifier, state swim qualifier, two-time U.P. record holder and four-time KHS swim record holder.

McRoberts plans to study business/marketing and Spanish plus do athletics at the University of Idaho.

— Logan O’Brion is the son of Bill and Jen O’Brion. His school activities include marching band, pep band, drumline, jazz band, jazz combo and National Honor Society. Honors are top 10% of the junior class, National Honor Society, advanced placement United States History Award, exemplary performance Award at WSMA Music Festival for drum kit solo and six events that received the highest possible rating at State Solo and Ensemble.

O’Brion plans to pursue a forestry degree at the University of Montana.

— Alexis Stanley is the daughter of Nicole and Vonley Stanley. Her school activities include High School Bowl, KHS swim team, track and field, and National Honor Society historian. Honors are honor roll for four years, National Honor Society, volunteer merit and honor awards through Innerview, and lettered in academics, band and swim

ILIANA GAYAN

Stanley plans to study history and political science at Central Michigan University.

— Mya Watkins is the daughter of Julie and Andrew Watkins. Her school activities include president of junior and senior class, Key Club secretary, National Honor Society service chair/blood program leader through Red Cross, Flivver Way ambassador, student council secretary, member of The Cure’s Student Leadership Alliance and volunteer at Michigan Youth Leadership Conference, or MyLead. Her honors are Student of the Week, Academic Letter and Bar, Top 10% junior and senior year, Dickinson-Iron Intermediate School District Student of the Semester for Education Careers, Coca-Cola Scholar semifinalist, NMU Waldo Scholarship and NMU Merit Scholarship.

Watkins plans to major in secondary education/integrated science at Northern Michigan University.

— Catlyn Wetzel is the daughter of Sonja and Steve Wetzel. Her school activities include Key Club freshman and sophomore year; HOSA — Future Health Professionals, formerly known as Health Occupations Students of America — regionals third-place junior year; HOSA regionals first place senior year; and HOSA officer senior year. Honors are Innerview Merit Community Service Award, high honor roll, Innerview Zero Hunger Award and All A’s Academic Letter and Bar.

Wetzel plans to major in biomedical sciences and planning North Park University in Chicago toward a career in neuroscience research.

— Nolan White is the son of Geoffrey and Caryl White. His school activities include marching band, pep band, jazz band, concert band, Solo and Ensemble, swim team, football, bowling, French Club, jazz combo and MOTOR band. His honors are Top 10%, KHS student ambassador, marching band drum major, French Club president, prom king, Homecoming king, MTU Leading Scholar, All-GNC kicker, bowling awards, All-U.P. Conference tennis singles champion and All-U.P. Conference Dream Team, Youth Spirit of Hope Award with 200 service hours and Youth Changemaker Award with 400 service hours.

White plans to major in medical laboratory science at Michigan Technological University.

Kingsford High School’s graduation ceremonies are set for 10 a.m. Saturday, May 25.
