IM man sentenced in school threats

ADAM MURRAY

IRON MOUNTAIN — An Iron Mountain man will spend 30 months to 10 years in prison for making terrorist threats.

Adam Fowler Murray, 26, pleaded no contest in March to one count of false report or threat of terrorism, two counts of computers-using to commit a crime and one count of controlled substance-possession of methamphetamine/ecstasy. A charge of child sexually abusive activity- distributing or promoting, was dismissed.

According to the Iron Mountain Police Department, Murray was arrested on April 11, 2023, after the Green Bay Police Department in Wisconsin advised that a person made threats online toward schools. Area schools went into a lockdown.

Murray’s attorney, Trenton Stupak, argued Tuesday in Dickinson County Circuit for a sentence on the low end of the guidelines.

“Prior to April 2023, Adam Murray had a clean slate, he had never been to a courthouse, no prior incarcerations or no experience with the criminal justice system whatsoever,” Stupak said. “That is what is so puzzling and so troubling.”

Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Kristin Kass said that even though Murray acted as an individual, his actions affected many, including teachers and parents at all of the area schools. Kass asked the Circuit Court Judge Mary Barglind to exceed the guidelines.

“I want to take this opportunity to apologize to the court, along with members of the community for my words and actions that led us to this point today,” Murray said during the sentencing. “I am deeply remorseful for the fear and concern I caused and I am sorry to anyone, especially to the children and teachers of schools that I impacted by my poor choices that day.”

Barglind told Murray that his actions may have just been a blip in his life but they were not a blip on the community. Barglind said that the silver lining in this case was knowing that the legal justice system works, she commended area law enforcement and school officials for their quick and effective actions.

Barglind then handed down sentences of 24 months to 10 years on the controlled substance – possession of methamphetamine/ecstasy charge, 30 months to 5 years for false report or threat of terrorism, 30 months to 7 years on one of the computers-using to commit a crime charge, 30 months to 10 years on the other count and 24 months to 10 years on the possession of methamphetamine/ecstasy charge.

All sentences will run concurrently and Murray was given credit for 392 days served.
