Vehicle in fatal crash tried to pass ambulance

WELLS TOWNSHIP — A vehicle involved in a fatal head-on crash Monday was passing an ambulance with emergency lights and sirens activated when it crashed into another vehicle parked on the side of the highway,

Michigan State Police troopers were called about 3:50 p.m. to U.S. 2 and 41 near E & K Auto Repair in Wells Township for a crash involving two pickup trucks, according to a news release from the MSP Gladstone Post.

They learned a Rampart EMS ambulance with emergency lights and sirens activated was westbound on U.S. 2 and 41 when a Chevrolet Silverado pickup attempted to pass at a high rate of speed. The truck then struck a Dodge Ram pickup on the shoulder of the roadway that had yielded to the emergency vehicle.

The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado, a 35-year-old Escanaba man, was pronounced dead at the crash site.

The driver and passenger of the Dodge Ram sustained severe injuries as a result of the crash and were transported to OSF St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba.

The investigation remains ongoing, according to MSP. Reckless driving and failure to yield for an emergency vehicle are factors in the crash.

Troopers were assisted by Escanaba Public Safety Police and Fire, Delta County Sheriff’s Office, Delta County Victims Service Unit and Rampart EMS.
