Dickinson board nixes $26K video
IRON MOUNTAIN — Dickinson County Board has pulled the plug on a promotional video for the county proposed by the International City/County Management Association.
The board on June 5 had authorized $26,300 for the project but less than a week later postponed the idea. On Monday, it rescinded the authorization.
There was no discussion. Minutes from a June 27 finance meeting indicate there was a consensus to instead use the funds toward mending fencing around a former mine site.
Controller Brian Bousley said Dickinson County was approached about the video after ICMA had researched collaborations in the region.
The video was to be shown on YouTube and at ICMA’s annual conference in September in Pittsburgh. The five-minute segment was to be prepared and edited by Washington D.C.-based WebsEdge, with county access to about two hours of other footage after a 10-hour visit.
At a June 11 meeting, Seth Anderson of Norway, co-founder of Mountain Media House in Iron Mountain, told the board he was disappointed no advertised bidding was done for the production. The board, without discussion, agreed to postpone it.
At the board’s June 5 meeting, the vote to proceed was 3-1, with Commissioner Ann Martin dissenting and Chairman Henry Wender absent. The project would have been funded from the county’s share of Michigan’s adult-use marijuana taxes and fees, totaling $177,259 this year.
ICMAtv is available on YouTube, featuring a variety of videos at https://www.youtube.com/@WebsEdgeSociety.
In other action Monday, the county board:
— Heard Commissioner Joe Stevens report progress on repairs to a cabin in the Fumee Lake Natural Area. Okler Roofing of Kingsford and 41 Lumber of Quinnesec donated materials and the county construction crew provided labor for a roof replacement, he said. Further improvements are needed before the cabin can go back into service. The structure dates to the Depression-era Works Progress Administration.
— Reappointed Dennis Baldinelli of Kingsford to a three-year term on the Brownfield Redevelopment Authority. Two terms remain open.
— Supported the U.P. Area Agency on Aging’s annual implementation plan for services to the elderly across the Upper Peninsula. The plan can be viewed at the Escanaba-based Upper Peninsula Commission for Area Progress website at https://upcap.org/program/u-p-area-agency-on-aging-upaaa/.
— Approved a request from Uren-Cooper-Johnson American Legion Post 50 to sell beer, wine and food at a veterans appreciation picnic and concert July 27 at Lake Antoine Park.
