Heavy damage but no injuries in G Street house fire
IRON MOUNTAIN — No one was injured but a home at 901 E. G St. sustained heavy damage in the kitchen and dining room areas and smoke and heat damage elsewhere during a fire reported at 7:11 p.m. Tuesday, the Iron Mountain Fire Department said.
An initial crew of four Iron Mountain firefighters arrived within three minutes of the call, finding the single-story, ranch-style home had light smoke coming from attic vents and heavy smoke coming from the front, Jeff Friedenstab, Iron Mountain deputy director of fire services, said in a news release Wednesday.
“Interior crews found heavy smoke and fire conditions in the kitchen and dining room area of the home and extinguished a majority of the fire,” he said. “The homeowner had no working smoke alarms, which allowed the fire to go undetected and rapidly grow in size, while also causing a delay in notifying 911 of the fire,” Friedenstab added.
Kingsford Public Safety Department and Breitung Township Fire Department provided mutual aid, with all units clearing the site by 9:32 p.m., Friedenstab said.
Also assisting were Iron Mountain Police Department, DTE Energy, We Energies, Integrity Care EMS, Iron Mountain Department of Public Works, Dickinson County Victim Services Unit and the American Red Cross.
