This week’s Back to the Present, provided by the Menominee Range Historical Museum in Iron Mountain, is an early view of the Edvin Freeman Livery and Sale Stable that was located in the parking lot behind the 400 block of Stephenson Avenue.

The owner’s father, Carl E. Freeman, is in the stable doorway. The man holding the horses is unidentified.

Freeman was born June 7, 1857, in Varmland, Sweden, and came to the United States at a young age. He first settled in Norway.

He and his wife were the third family to establish residence in Iron Mountain. They arrived before the railroad was extended from Quinnesec into the city, making the trip by ox cart.

The only building then in the town site was a boarding house, where the Kingsford Motor Car Co. garage stood on the corner of Stephenson Avenue and Brown Street.

Freeman established a livery stable, which he conducted for many years. He later entered the lumbering business and was a logger and mine-timber cruiser for several years.

His dealings in real estate and lumber were extended through the U.P. and in northern Wisconsin when those areas were first being settled.

After retiring from active work he spent time at his farm near Niagara, Wis.

The couple had four sons — Rudolph K. and Edvin of Iron Mountain; Verner of Marinette, Wis.; and Dewey of Niagara, Wis. — and a daughter, Mrs. Vera Croll of Iron Mountain.

Edvin passed away in 1940, and Mrs. Freeman died three years earlier.

Starting at $3.50/week.
