Embattled Northpointe CEO resigns

KINGSFORD — After five years, Jennifer Cescolini has stepped down from her role as CEO of Northpointe Behavioral Healthcare System. The Northpointe board accepted her resignation, effective Sept. 30, at a meeting Thursday.

Brent Johnson, Northpointe’s chief operating officer, said that Cescolini gave no specific reason in her letter of resignation and that comment from the board would be forthcoming.

Cescolini, meanwhile, did not respond to requests for comment.

In March, the Menominee County Board of Commissioners had passed a vote of no confidence in Cescolini, citing differences over crisis care services.

Minutes from a Sept. 16 committee meeting of the Dickinson County Board indicated Northpointe would need to search for a new CEO, as Cescolini had resigned. Dickinson Commissioner Ann Martin reported at that time that Northpointe has a $1.3 million surplus from Medicaid and would be looking at a one-time retention bonus for all employees.

Northpointe, a community mental health service provider, serves Iron, Dickinson and Menominee counties. It’s governed by a 12-member board, with five representatives each from Dickinson and Menominee counties and two from Iron County, each appointed by the respective county boards.

It provides services for those with severe emotional, behavioral and/or intellectual/developmental disabilities and has offices in Kingsford, Iron River and Menominee.

About 94% of Northpointe’s funding comes through Medicaid. State general funds, at 5%, and county appropriations, 1%, make up the rest.
