KINGSFORD — The 21st-annual Ford Airport Day is planned from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the airport in Kingsford, with a full slate of aviation displays and attractions, including plane and helicopter rides.
“We’ve got a really early model corporate jet that will do flyovers,” said Tom Sullivan, president of Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 439. Flyovers will take place from 12:45 to 1 p.m.
“It’s very unusual,” he said of the plane.
The plane formerly was used by Bob Hoover, a well-known American fighter pilot, test pilot, flight instructor, and record-setting air show aviator. The early corporate jet was featured in his air shows.
Attendees can purchase helicopter rides and rides in the A-26 Invader “The Silver Dragon” that will be on display. It is one of the few remaining World War II bombers of this class that can still fly.

A new Dell computer is being installed to operate the Snoopy flight simulator, so it should be available this year, Sullivan said.
The seven-car kiddie train will offer rides for young children and pedal planes will be on site.
Children again will be able to operate drones. Other attractions for kids include a climbing wall and bounce houses.
Young Eagle Flights are planned for ages 8 to 17. Pre-registration is required for these flights and should be done in advance, as space is limited. Those interested can go online to yeday.org to sign up and select an open time slot.
A custom car, truck and motorcycle show will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with registration from 9 to 11 a.m. Trophies will be awarded at 3 p.m. in several classes.
A pancake breakfast will be served from 8 to 10 a.m., with lunch following from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the hangar. They will offer hot dogs, hamburgers, brats and a variety of snacks and beverages.
New displays have been added, Sullivan said. “A new hanger will be open for spectators to view quite a bit of stuff, including corporate jets. A few more things than normal,” he said. Numerous planes and aviation items can be viewed as well.
“We’re still looking for volunteers. A lot of areas need help, if they are willing to come out and get involved,” he said.
The event is sponsored by Ford Airport; U.P. Truck Center Towing & Recovery; Kubick Aviation; Champion Inc.; TADCA; Bacco Construction; WJNR WOBE; CSA Air Inc.; Town & Country Sales; First Bank; ProTech Lube Center & Car Wash; Iron Mountain-Kingsford Community Federal Credit Union; Lake Shore/Trident Maritime Systems; First National Bank & Trust; Blagec Brothers; David and Claire Pasihow; Gingras Financial; and Lime Great Lakes Forest Management.
Friday will feature the Tribute to Veterans program beginning at 11 a.m. in the Dickinson County hangar at Ford Airport. Veterans also will be treated to a free lunch and have an opportunity to check out the displays before Saturday’s event.
Guest speaker will be Mary Stolze, who served as a nurse in a MASH-style field hospital during Vietnam.
“She will be giving a nice presentation, with a different perspective from the field hospital dealing with the injured,” Sullivan said.
Admission for Ford Airport Day is $10 per person, with no charge for children younger than age 8. Families pay no more than $30.
