Guilty plea in IM church embezzlement
IRON MOUNTAIN — An Iron Mountain woman has admitted to embezzling thousands of dollars from the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Iron Mountain over four years.
Lisa Jean Broman, 48, pleaded guilty Monday in Dickinson County Circuit Court to the charge of embezzlement — agent or trustee $1,000 or more but less than $20,000, a felony that could have carried a prison sentence of up to five years.
According to the criminal complaint, Broman’s activities took place from 2019 until March 2023.
Under a plea agreement, she must pay back a total of $35,000: $10,000 by July 31 of this year and $10,000 by July 31 of 2025 and 2026, with the remaining $5,000 repaid through monthly payments that begin immediately, Kristin Kass, chief assistant prosecutor, said in court.
Broman must also write a sincere letter of apology to Immaculate Conception Parish.
The prosecution agreed to a 30-day jail cap and will forgo additional charges.
Sentencing is set for Jan. 20. Broman has been free on a $2,500 bond.
In a statement, the Rev. Michael Chenier of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church said, “I am grateful to the finance council at the Immaculate Conception for their role in uncovering this, as well as the forensic accountant we worked with. The parish is thankful to local law enforcement and the prosecutor’s office for bringing this case to justice.”
