Kingsford council OKs variance for Habitat for Humanity lots
KINGSFORD — Kingsford City Council has approved a variance request for a rear-yard setback requirement for Habitat for Humanity Menominee River.
The variance is for lots 19 and 20 at 445 Roseland St. Habitat plans to build five houses on 10 lots on the block. Because of the topography, it is more feasible to have the houses face the alley, rather than the street.
The variance allows Habitat to build closer than the 35-foot required setback from the alley.
In other business Monday, the council:
— Approve a bid from MBM Construction in Kingsford for $23,750 to put together the kit for a new pavilion at Ford Park, provided it meets approval by the city manager and superintendent of public works. The sidewalk leading to the pavilion has been completed. The project is funded by a $100,000 donation from Marty and Rick Lagina. After the pavilion is completed, the rest of the donation will be used to purchase pirate-themed playground equipment.
— Learned the city was not approved for a USDA Rural Development grant toward the purchase of a new police vehicle. The council agreed to allow the public safety department to look into leasing two Ford Explorers.
— Approved a request from Todd Dooley to provide fireworks at the final home varsity football game Oct. 25. This is an annual event.
— Received a letter from the Sons of the Legion thanking the city for its donation toward the Fourth of July fireworks display.
— Heard from City Manager Mike Stelmaszek that state revenue sharing for 2025 will be $719,987, down about $2,600 from this year.
