On your mark, get set, skol! Norway runners to challenge Leif’s course

Tori Normand, left, cheers on 2023 Leif’s Run participant Maverick Kelly of Norway, as Dennis Lynch “Leif Erikson” gets ready to give him a high-five as he crosses the finish line. The annual Leif’s Run takes place Saturday in downtown Norway. Racers will have an option of three courses — 10K, 5K and 2-mile fun run.

NORWAY — Whether a runner aiming for a personal best or just out for a jog with friends, the Leif’s Run on Saturday has a place for you.

So lace up your running shoes, don your most festive Viking gear and take part in the annual adventure through Norway as part of the Leif Erikson Festival.

Participants again begin and end the run near City Hall in downtown Norway, said Tori Normand, who took over as race coordinator last year.

“I felt strongly about having it the same day as the festival, and bringing it downtown along with all the other activities,” she said.

The race begins at 9 a.m., with registration from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. in the City Hall lobby.

Seth Anderson crosses the finish at last year’s Leif’s Run in Norway.

Leif’s Run again offers three options for participants — a 10K, 5K and 2-mile Fun Run.

The 10K and 5K course takes runners on a scenic tour around town that includes the challenge of the Norway hill.

Miles will be marked with water stops along the way, including a station at the Norway Spring.

The 2-mile is a flat course for anyone to enjoy, she added.

All three groups will do a lap around Strawberry Lake.

Everyone is encouraged to take part, as the event is stroller- and dog-friendly.

All three races will be chip-timed this year by Tortoise and Hare Timing, Normand said.

“We had feedback from our fun run racers last year — especially from the kids — that it would be nice to have their times as well,” she said.

Normand added that Tortoise and Hare bring in a large, blow-up arch and speakers for music. “They do a nice job and give the race a different atmosphere — it’s more fun,” she said.

The registration fee for the 10K and 5K is $35 and the 2-mile Fun Run is $25.

Race entry includes a long-sleeve T-shirt, but there is an option for no shirt with a price reduction.

Only those runners who pre-register will be guaranteed to receive a T-shirt; however, anyone is welcome to sign up on event day, Normand said.

The Swedish Passport in Norway donated the shirts that feature a new Leif’s Run 2024 logo.

Everyone is encouraged to come dressed in Norse attire for the run, with prizes awarded for the best costumes.

After the races conclude at about 10:30 a.m., Sara Robinson will emcee the awards presentation at the bandshell.

Awards and prizes will be presented for top finishers overall — male and female for all three races — and in each age group for the 10K and 5K.

New custom-carved medals by Fifth Avenue Fab that features the Viking in the Downtown Square will be given to top finishers.

“It’s something unique and different this year,” Normand said.

Everyone gets $5 Viking bucks good at any participating downtown business as well as a coupon for Back 40 Axe Throwing that will be set up on 10th Avenue.

Back 40 Axe Throwing is sponsored by Biogold of Norway.

Mister Mom’s and Higher Love will host an After Glow this year for racers and volunteers.

From 4 to 6 p.m. on the outdoor grounds, Mister Mom’s will offer mead, glogg and Viking beer, along with authentic Norwegian snacks including Swedish meatballs.

The glogg will be made from rum from North Winds Distillery in Norway.

Hot chocolate and apple cider will be available.

Normand noted this is the last area run of the season until the Turkey Trot that takes place at the end of November.

“We are looking forward to another great event and hope everyone comes out to cheer on races before spending the afternoon at Leif Erikson Festival,” Normand said.
