Norway-Vulcan millage approved; school board races decided
IRON MOUNTAIN — Norway-Vulcan Area Schools won approval Tuesday to issue $10 million in general obligation bonds for maintenance, repairs and upgrades at the school campus built in 1992.
The preliminary vote total across the district was 1,848 yes to 1,201 no.
The estimated annual millage required to retire the debt over 20 years is 2.71 mills, or $2.71 per $1,000 of taxable value. School officials had pointed out taxpayers would see no increase if the millage passed, as this proposal replaces a bond approved in 2012 that ends in this coming spring.
In a race for four seats on the Norway-Vulcan School Board, elected were newcomers Marybeth Langin, with 1,750 votes; April VanEynde, 1,657 votes; Joey Pontbriand, 1,646 votes; and Joseph F. Occhietti, 1,631 votes. The terms are four years. Finishing out of the running was incumbent Joseph F. Rake with 1,129 votes.
Board incumbent Jenny DeDecker was the lone candidate for a partial term through 2026. She received 2,133 votes.
Elected to four-year terms on the Iron Mountain Board of Education were Darren Petschar, Jennifer Solka and James Carollo. Petschar led with 1,735 votes, followed by Solka, 1,707; and Carollo, 1,364. Other candidates were incumbent Eli Ward, 1,088 votes; and Joshua David Chevalier, 703 votes.
Juan M. Saldana was the lone candidate for a partial Iron Mountain school term through 2026. He received 2,421 votes.
Elected to the North Dickinson County School Board were incumbents Sara Grenier, 773 votes, and Krystal A. Fayas, 731 votes. Challenger Bob Massie received 646 votes.
