Norway gets closer to selling city cable system
Attorney hired to oversee final details
NORWAY — As the city gets closer to selling Norway’s cable system, officials will retain the services of attorney Michael J. Watza to handle some of the final details.
During a city council discussion Wednesday, it was noted final approval of the sale could soon be placed on a meeting agenda. Watza heads the governmental litigation and affairs practice at Kitch Attorneys and Counselors, which has a Marquette office.
The council had a public hearing on possibly selling the cable service — which offered television, internet and phone — in June 2022 and sent out a request for proposals to purchase the system in spring 2023. After initially receiving interest from a few parties only one would remain, Spectrum Mid-America, LLC.
In December 2023, the city signed a letter of intent with Spectrum to sell the cable system for $5 million. Since then, Spectrum has confirmed a desire to make the purchase.
In deciding on the sale, the council considered whether the city needed to be in the business of operating a cable company. Questions were raised about providing adequate, competitive service, keeping up with new technology and being able to recoup the city’s investments in the system.
In other business Wednesday, the council:
— Learned that the city will save some money on its recent police SUV purchase. At the Feb. 5 meeting, the council approved purchasing the vehicle locally from Town & County Sales for $52,684, or $6,512 more than the quote the city received from LaFontaine Ford of Lansing. When the city went to place the actual order to their desired specifications, the price was much less, only about $300 more than the offer from the MiDEAL state purchasing program dealer.
— Approved a special event request from the 906 Adventure Team to hold its weekly Adventure Bike Club events at Marion Park for the second year. The weekly rides will occur June 9 through Aug. 11. Traffic from Oak Crest Golf Course may be rerouted from 4 to 8 p.m. on those days.
