Breitung Township to explore replacing fire truck

QUINNESEC — The Breitung Township Board authorized Fire Chief Jim Rose to seek quotes for replacing one of its aging fire truck fleet and discussed other capital improvements Monday.

After the board had special meetings on capital improvements, Superintendent Steve Mulka compiled a list of items for a survey that will be sent to township residents.

Those items included fire truck replacement, a new fire station, a new community center, road projects, promotion of housing development, non-motorized paths, fire number sign upgrades, a recycling program and parks improvements.

Mulka will bring survey samples to the next meeting for board approval.

Ahead of the survey, the board is taking steps to move forward with replacing the fire department’s older trucks — it has two pumper trucks that date back to 2001.

Rose is getting specifications for a replacement, Mulka said. Supervisor Denny Olson said he would like to see Rose search out some prices on used but newer equipment.

In other business, the board:

— Agreed to purchasing a scoreboard for the Quinnesec Park softball field from Correct Digital Displays of Sandwich, Ill., for $6,552.25. The Little League will donate $9,000 toward the purchase and installation, with the public works department doing most of the installation work.

— Affirmed township employee Dave Pataconi’s move from part-time custodian to full-time public works, to take effect May 5.

— Heard interviews are on-going for the administrative assistant position, with two interviews left to complete.

— Gave Department of Public Works Superintendent Jason Davis permission to interview candidates for summer help. With Pataconi going full time in the public works department, the township will only need to hire one temporary summer employee.

— Selected a new style of letterhead as part of the township’s rebranding. The rebranding goes along with the township’s new Breitungtownshipmi.gov website, which will go live in April.

— Approved an Easter egg hunt April 19 at Quinnesec Park. An anonymous family and local volunteers are sponsoring the event.

— Voted to donate $200 to the Kingsford High School Senior All Night Party.

Starting at $3.50/week.
