Kingsford plans third water-sewer project at $9 million

KINGSFORD — The Kingsford City Council has approved a notice of intent to issue up to $9 million in bonds through the state’s Clean Water State Revolving Fund for a third water and sewer project, possibly starting next year.

According to material provided by City Manager Mike Stelmaszek, the project is the separation of the combined sewer system in the Ford Addition area. It includes the relocation of catch basin leads to dedicated storm manholes, installation of new manholes, reconditioning existing pipelines, relocating laterals to new sanitary pipelines and road, curb and sidewalk replacement.

The existing lift stations on Bancroft and Saratoga streets would be demolished and abandoned. A new gravity sewer main would be installed from the highest lift station to the intersection of North Pyle Drive and Woodward Avenue.

This project will tie into the current Heights/Ford Addition sewer and water project that is underway.

In other business, the council:

— Approved a $2,250 bid from North Bound Tree Service of Gaastra to remove nine large trees at the Marshfield Medical Center-Dickinson sleep clinic on Carpenter Avenue. This cost will be shared with Iron Mountain. A second bid from North Bound was also approved for $8,500 to remove about 30 trees of various size on the city right-of-way adjacent to Woodward Avenue at the Wilson Street intersection.

— Heard the council chambers will be used for first-line supervisor training and active shooter preparation training. The FBI will conduct the training and will also do a City Hall threat assessment. The dates and times are still being determined. City Hall staff and council members will also receive four hours of training.

— Learned the city no longer has to set an actual time for public hearings during a meeting.

— Set a budget workshop for 3 p.m. May 22.

— Heard a presentation from Barb Kramer of Lake Antoine Park Partners on the proposed new all-access playground LAPP wants to install at the lake. The project will cost about $400,000. They have raised about $100,000 and hope to have enough to purchase the equipment so it can be installed in the fall.

— Approved the $99,836 first payment for the second water and sewer project in the Heights/Ford Addition area.

— Set a hearing on a revised livestock and other animals ordinance for June 2.

Starting at $3.50/week.
