KINGSFORD — A friendly — and sassy — West Highland white terrier named Jordy is the new Daily News Pet Idol.
Jordy, a 3-year-old crammed full of personality, is owned by Paul and Sheri Simone of Kingsford.
“I thought it was a nice idea because you raise money for the Daily News,” Sheri said on her decision to enter Pet Idol.
This is the 12th year of The Daily News’ popular Pet Idol competition, in which area residents are invited to submit a photo of their animal companions at $5 per entry. The photos then run in The Daily News for the public to weigh in on their favorites. Each vote cast costs 25 cents, with no limit on voting — ballot stuffing actually is encouraged.
Pet Idol’s first round of voting began April 21, with 17 pets eventually advancing to the final round that started May 27 and closed June 9.

Money generated by the annual competition goes to the Newspapers in Education program, which places newspapers in school classrooms for teachers to use. Jordy also will be featured in NIE ads in The Daily News for the next school year.
Sheri was very surprised by the reaction she got from entering Jordy in the contest.
“Oh my gosh, I had friends and family that were getting the paper, watching the paper every day,” she said.
The couple previously had owned shih tzus. “After our shih tzus died we waited six months and my husband really wanted a dog,” Sheri said.
They saw an ad in the Advertiser for a Westiepoo, a cross between West Highland white terrier and a poodle. The breeder in Crivitz, Wis., had terrier puppies as well when they went to visit.
“The Westiepoo wasn’t really what we wanted,” Sheri said. “So, he (Jordy) came up to us right away and he was very friendly. We bonded with him right away.”
“He’s just a typical terrier sometimes,” Paul said.
“He’s protective of the house, to say the least,” Sheri said.
“He sure is,” Paul added. “Any kind of delivery people come by, you’re going to know it.”
Jordy also loves his toys, especially a stuffed mushroom they call “Toad.”
“He hauls it all over and sleeps with it,” Paul said. “He’s crate-trained so he sleeps all night in the crate with this thing. He takes care of it.”
“It’s his baby. Ever since he was little, he’s very attached to it,” Sheri agreed.
The couple are both retired. He was co-owner of Simone Insurance and she worked several jobs over the years.
“He’s been a good pet. He’s got a big personality,” she said.
“He’s got a big personality for sure — loves his toys, going for walks, typical dog stuff,” Paul said.
