IRON MOUNTAIN — The Dickinson County Board has approved facility rental fees for the county fairgrounds property in Norway, largely following what’s established by the fair board.
One change was on a discount that had been provided to 4-H youth clubs to use the horse ring. The new fee for all renters is $60 for the horse ring and $75 for the adjoining covered arena, or $120 for both.
Previously, the 4-H fee had been $40 for the ring, $50 for the covered arena and $75 for both. Other users had paid $80 for the ring, $100 for the covered arena and $150 for both.
There is also metered electric charge for use of the covered arena and a $150 cleaning deposit for each individual facility.
The county board authorized the change in fees for non-fair use of the fairgrounds June 9 at the suggestion of County Board Chairman Dan Harrington, who said one type of user shouldn’t be favored over another.
Commissioner Joe Stevens questioned why the fee schedule that was effective July 1, 2024, hadn’t come to the board earlier. In the past, however, the county board hasn’t formally acted on fees set by the fair board.
Harrington and Commissioner Victoria Jakel since January have been the county board’s representatives on the 13-member fair board. Formerly, it was John Degenaer Jr. and Ann Martin, who are no longer on the county board.
Harrington noted the fairgrounds has 130 spots open for camping. The non-fair fee is $20 per site, with a 10% discount after seven days.
Rental fees approved without changes for the John Degenaer Jr. Administration Building are $350 per day in winter and $300 in summer, with a graduation party rate of $200. There is also a $150 cleaning deposit. Fees are waived for senior all-night parties for Dickinson County schools, with the cleaning deposit still in place.
The grandstand rental fee is $350 per day, with a $300 cleaning deposit. The circus fee is $2,200 plus a $2,000 cleaning deposit. For a large equine event it’s $1,100 plus a deposit and potential cleanup fee.
In addition to facilities that include barns, a race track and a horticulture building, the fair has other items available for rent. These include 10-by-30-foot tents at $50 per day plus a deposit, and DJ equipment at $250 per day, plus a retainer.
