Person dies while in deputy’s custody in Marinette County

MARINETTE, Wis. – The state has been called in to investigate the death of a person early Wednesday while in Marinette County Sheriff’s Office custody just after a traffic stop in the Town of Grover.

The Marinette County deputy who pulled the vehicle over just after midnight near the intersection of County Road B and Poplar Ridge Lane reported seeing a person in the driver’s seat appear to ingest a substance, according to a news release from Marinette County Sheriff Randy Miller.

The person became unresponsive a short time after being taken into custody. Law enforcement and EMS attempted life saving measures, but the person was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, according to the news release.

No name or further details were provided on the person.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the death investigation, assisted by a DCI Crime Response Specialist. All involved law enforcement are fully cooperating with DCI, the news release stated.

DCI will turn over the investigative reports to the Marinette County district attorney’s office when the investigation concludes, Miller said in the release. He referred all inquiries to the Wisconsin DOJ.

The DOJ did not respond to a call Thursday for more information.
