Baij drives in winning run, Finley named MVP in UP all-star game

NORWAY — Norway senior Cole Baij drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning as Team Michigan edged Team Superior 7-6 in the first U.P. All-Star baseball game held Monday at Mike Maule Field in Norway.

Baij’s RBI capped a rally that saw Team Michigan come back from a 5-0 deficit.

Kingsford senior Andres Finley went 2 for 3 with two doubles with an RBI and a run scored and was named the most valuable player for Team Michigan.

Tanner Baker of Rudyard was chosen MVP for Team Superior.

Team Superior opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first before pushing three more across in the second. A solo home run by Baker in the fourth inning pushed the lead to 5-0.

Team Michigan crept a bit closer with a single tally in the fourth and then put up a 4-spot in the fifth to tie the game.

Team Michigan took a 6-5 lead in the sixth with a single run, but Team Superior answered with a run in the top of the seventh to pull even. Baij then finished the game in the bottom half when he drove in courtesy runner Aiden Sevon of Menominee with the winning run.

Norway senior Bryce Adams showcased his versatile capabilities with two hits and an RBI at the plate and a perfect fifth inning on the hill in which he struck out the side.

Baij pitched the seventh inning for Team Michigan and picked up the win.

Finley started on the hill for Team Michigan and allowed two hits and one run in one inning of work.

Kingsford senior Gavin Trevillian ripped a triple for Team Superior, which outhit Team Michigan 10-8. Trevillian also pitched the first inning for his club, allowing one run on one hit with a walk and a strikeout.

Kingsford’s Garrett Brown pitched the sixth inning for Team Superior, allowing one run with two walks. Brown did not give up a hit.

Each team used seven pitchers in the game with none pitching more than an inning.

This year’s game, organized through the Cold Weather Baseball Coaches Alliance, is slated to be the first in an annual event that will showcase the top players in the U.P.

“It’s going to continue,” said Team Michigan coach Tony Adams of Norway. “It’ll be in Escanaba next year and we’re going to continue to try and grow it.”
