This week’s Back to the Present, provided by the Menominee Range Historical Museum, highlights Iron Mountain High School.

The Oct. 4, 1912, postcard is a view of the newly constructed high school taken by Albert Quade, a local photographer at that time. This shows the front facade, facing south, and the west end of the building along Stockbridge Avenue.

Total cost was $219,086 for the 208-by-116-foot structure. It opened to the public for inspection Sept. 20, 1912.

Architects were Charlton & Kuenzli of Marquette and Milwaukee. At that time, they planned nearly all the leading public buildings in the Upper Peninsula. The first sketch of the proposed high school was done in May 1911.

The basement consisted of the gymnasium with a running track, dressing rooms and storage.

The east end of the first floor was the manual training department, with machinery, tool room, packing room and printing room. On the west end was the science department, consisting of sewing room, cooking room and lunch room.

The Assembly Hall; superintendent’s, principal’s and general offices; board room; book, teacher and recitation rooms were housed on the second floor.

The third floor featured the gallery and upper part of the Assembly Hall and stage, along with music, typewriting, drawing, physical laboratory and botany rooms.

It was noted that the floors were constructed of reinforced concrete, with minimal wood used in the building with the exception of doors, sashes and frames.

The 1940-50 postcard taken at the northeast corner of the intersection of West B and Stockbridge Avenue, shows the IMHS with more mature trees and shrubs in the landscape at the facade of the building.

This early view of the Assembly Hall shows the desks, including the teacher’s desk in front of the stage, a piano to the left and the clock to the right, as well as the set for a production on the stage.

Also shown is today’s view of the front of Iron Mountain High School facing A Street.
