IM board sets numbers needed for tennis, golf teams

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Iron Mountain School Board agreed Monday to athletic committee recommendations that would allow boys and girls tennis and golf teams to compete.

The tennis teams must have at least 10 players, with 12 considered a full team. Golf teams should have at least four primary members, with five being a full team.

Students who are in dual sports in the same season must designate a primary sport that takes priority if conflicts develop in scheduling.

The board in June voted to eliminate both the boys and girls tennis and golf teams due to anticipated low numbers. They reversed that decision at a special meeting two weeks later after the girls tennis team, which competes in the fall, looked to have a full 12-member roster. The other teams compete in the spring, so participation is unclear at this point.

If teams don’t have a full roster after the first couple of competitions, the board will revisit the issue to decide whether to keep the team.

In other business, the board:

— Heard a presentation on the upcoming Bay College Iron Mountain campus millage renewal from Cindy Gallagher, vice president of Workforce Innovation & Strategic Partnerships, and Jason Sullivan, executive director of the Iron Mountain campus. In 2003, Dickinson County voters approved a millage to construct and operate the campus on land donated by Dr. Ted and Eleanor Fornetti. This would extend the rate of $1 per $1,000 of taxable home value another 20 years. They would like to add more evening business classes, an associate’s degree for high school students and a full-time English teacher at the Iron Mountain campus. They also highlighted community partnerships such as the Leadership Academy and having an art exhibit with Borderland Arts that changes about every three months.

— Hired Sarah Pericolosi as fifth through 12th grade principal/special education coordinator, with a start date of July 14; Adam Savage as fifth through 12th grade education assistant; Lucas Cavalieri as at-risk education assistant; and Janice Kaye as secondary special education teacher, with start dates of Aug. 1.

— Accepted the letter of intent to retire from Laurie Mongrain, longtime office manager at the Iron Mountain-Kingsford Community Schools, effective July 31.

— Accepted letters of resignation from Charlie Gerhard as secondary English teacher and seventh grade boys basketball coach.
