Macker street closures OK’d for Aug. 15-17

IRON MOUNTAIN — Street closures have been approved for this summer’s Gus Macker outdoor basketball tournament set for Aug. 15-17.

The event is later than in recent years and consequently won’t coincide with a Saturday in the Park fundraiser at Iron Mountain City Park, which is set for July 18-19.

Deadline to register for the Gus Macker tournament is July 28. Proceeds benefit the new Imagination Factory Community Center.

Iron Mountain City Council this week approved the street closure request, which is the same as last year and is capable of accommodating 250 teams.

It mainly shuts Carpenter Avenue from Ludington Street south to West C Street. Closures will be from 5 a.m. Friday, Aug. 15, through 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug 17.

Also affected are Hughitt Street from Prospect Avenue east to the railroad track; West A Street from Prospect east to the railroad track; and West B Street from the driveway of Main Street Pizza east to the Kingsley North parking lot.

This allows tournament organizers to expand beyond 250 teams as needed. Otherwise, all courts will be on Carpenter Avenue.

The Friday activities include team registrations and an obstacle course competition with 3-on-3 games to follow on Saturday and Sunday. More tournament information can be found at https://macker.com/local/iron-mountain.

The council, in another matter, approved allowing an admission fee for Saturday in the Park from 2 p.m. Friday, July 18, through 11 p.m. Saturday, July 19.

The admission fee is $15, good for both days, and free for children younger than 12. Four local bands are set to perform and there will be an inflatable bounce house and obstacle course on site. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. July 18 and 2:30 p.m. July 19.

Also approved Monday was a request from the Downtown Development Authority to use the lodge at City Park as an alternative site for summer Out to Lunch concerts. If there is rain, the Thursday afternoon event has traditionally been moved from the downtown stage indoors to The Braumart. That venue, however, won’t be available this Thursday or on July 31.
